Gov. DeSantis wants amendment petition changes after failed abortion rights initiative

The article details how Governor DeSantis wants to change the process through which petitions are collected in the state of Florida. Claiming that there was petition fraud during the process of collecting signatures for Amendment 4 to be on the ballot, he wants to implement signature verification and proposes for ballot initiatives to be their own election cycle.  He also claims that “special interest” has taken over the ballot initiative process. 

  • As a reminder, the governor got personally involved in the fight against Amendment 4 by using tax-payer money to fund anti Amendment 4 ads. 
  • Lawyers also sent cease-and-desist letters to TV stations playing ads in favor of Amendment 4. However, Amendment 4 still received 6 million votes (57%) but was short of the 60% threshold.
