This fall, we learned about the stories of two Black women who died as a result of Georgia’s abortion ban: Amber Nicole Thurman and Candi Miller. ProPublica reported that the state’s maternal mortality review committee determined these deaths were preventable. Their most recent report spanned 2018-2020 and reviewed 113 pregnancy-related deaths, of which 101 may have been preventable.
Multiple states already face delays in their review process and in some cases, retaliatory actions have been taken against members who speak out. In Georgia, the committee was just disbanded, and the Department of Public Health announced that every role will be replaced.
As this year closes with much uncertainty around the future of abortion access across the nation, we remain committed in our fight for transparency, equity, and a better future for all patients.
Regardless of where we live, we deserve the best care possible when making decisions for our health and our futures. The work continues.
