With 2024 soon to end, partners on the local, state, national, and international levels have year-end actions we can take for the rights and communities we care about.
This week’s is brought to you by FRF Steering Committee Member and Florida NOW President Debbie Deland: Tell Biden to Certify the ERA. Publication of the ERA would enshrine the following 24 words in the U.S. Constitution: “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” Once published, the U.S. Constitution will explicitly prohibit sex discrimination, which includes discrimination based on sexuality and gender identity. This would finally put women and queer people in the Constitution, and protect abortion, gender-affirming care, and put women and LGBTQ+ folks on a closer footing with men. Tell Biden to direct the archivist to publish the ERA now as now part of the Constitution. Call the White House and request the ERA be published: 202-456-1111. The line is staffed: 11am to 4pm, Tuesday-Thursday. Script: “Hi, my name is [Your Name], and I’m calling to urge President Biden to make the publication of the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution a priority for his legacy before leaving the White House.” You can also text, leave multiple messages, and submit a comment on the White House website, whitehouse.gov/contact/share/ through mid-January. This fight is over 100 years in the making, now facing an urgent crossroads: let’s give it all we’ve got!
