- Oral arguments for Medina v. Planned Parenthood were heard this past week. This case challenges South Carolina’s attempt at limiting individuals’ choice in choosing Planned Parenthood as a healthcare provider. The current policy prevents people with Medicaid insurance from accessing STI testing, cancer screenings, and other essential services.
- It’s crucial to note that the policy being discussed impacts low income and people of color the most. In South Carolina Medicaid covers 1 out of 5 people, and 63% of recipients are women. Additionally, 58% of South Carolinians identify as non-White. This case comes at a time when Planned Parenthood faces accusations of waste and fraud.
- The Supreme Court decision could embolden other states and the Department of Health and Human Services to adopt similar policies.
