Most of us remember where we were when we heard the news in 2016, out late or waking up to the horror that had unfolded in Central Florida.
10 years ago today, 49 people were killed, with many injured and traumatized during the Pulse Nightclub shooting, most of whom were young LGBTQ+ folks of color.
Those of us in Orlando especially remember the days that unfolded afterwards: lines wrapping around buildings to donate blood, rainbow ribbons, origami, flowers, and hugs given out everywhere crowds would gather to hear the Orlando Gay Chorus perform, mutual aid turned into long-lasting organizations turned into repeated calls for systemic changes, when dance once again became an act of defiance.
|
A decade later, we honor through action the futures that should have been able to unfold with joy, wonder, pride, and days that were abundant.
We will never forget this impossible heartbreak and the unwavering responsibility we have to hold each other in grief and accountable for change.
