Advocates to mark the 47th anniversary of Roe v. Wade with press conference; call for Florida legislators to halt attacks on reproductive care
TALLAHASSEE – On the 47th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the historic federal decision that legalized safe and legal access to abortion, a coalition of reproductive rights advocates and groups from throughout the state will gather for a press conference at the State Capitol.
“Anti-abortion politicians are chipping away access to safe and legal abortion,” said Charo Valero, State Policy Director at the Latina Institute Florida. “With the legislative session underway, we must send a strong message that the rights of Floridians must be protected.”
One bill of concern is Senate Bill 404/House Bill 265 which would force health care providers to get notarized permission from a parent before providing abortion care to a minor. SB 404 has its final committee stop the same morning; then both it and HB 265 are in position for a floor vote.
“This legislation promotes the false idea that young people are not responsible enough to make decisions about their bodies, but they are responsible enough to become parents,” said Laura Hernandez, Legislative Manager for the Florida Alliance of Planned Parenthood Affiliates. “If a young person is not communicating with their guardians about their reproductive choices, there is a reason, and that reason is usually because they do not feel safe enough to do so. We will not stand idly by while our constitutional rights to bodily autonomy are stripped away.”

WHAT: Press conference in defense of safe and legal abortion with call on Florida legislators to protect the rights of all women. Participants will be rallying and holding signs. Plenty of interview and photograph opportunities.
