Medication Abortion Access in Flux
Just hours after this newsletter hit your inbox last week, access to medication abortion in the United States shifted. By Monday, it shifted again. By next week, it may change again.
Let’s be clear: people across the United States have turned to medication abortion through telehealth as a trusted, safe, and effective method of care for years. The attacks we’re seeing now are entirely based in politics, not science, and could have a sweeping effect on abortion care, miscarriage management, and emergency treatment.
As we wait to see what the Supreme Court will do next, here’s what folks need to remember:
- People who need abortions, regardless of where they live, still have options:
- Patients are using ineedana.com to find clinics near them.
- People across the world have read information about self-managed abortion and abortion pills by mail from resources like PlanCPills.org, which isn’t going anywhere.
- The Repro Legal Helpline is available for people to understand their legal options and risk, regardless of where they live.
- Politicians and judges have no place in families’ personal medical decisions around pregnancy.
- Medication abortion care is a safe, effective, FDA-approved option for ending a pregnancy and is used for more than 60% of abortions in the United States. It has a 20+-year track record and hundreds of studies showing its safety.
Remember, when changes to abortion access hit the news, it causes immense confusion and panic for patients who need care right now. It is our responsibility to counter that with the facts and resources our communities need.
