Families built through surrogacy and IVF deserve the same dignity, stability, and legal protections as any other family. But here in Florida, family freedoms are facing increasing political attacks.
This legislative session, we saw the first bills filed designed to add unnecessary barriers to parenthood through surrogacy and IVF. Though we were able to defeat them, a last-minute amendment was adopted to a “Foreign Influence” bill, barring surrogacy agreements with anyone from a so-called “foreign country of concern”. Without action, this could be only the beginning.
|
This month, news also broke of appointed Attorney General James Uthmeier inserting himself into a sealed surrogacy case. As Equality Florida’s General Counsel and Public Policy Director Jon Harris Mauer noted, “Family is defined by love, not Attorney General Uthmeier’s campaign strategy. Politicians have no business intruding because parents turn to surrogacy and IVF to start the family they’ve desperately dreamed of.”
“This is part of a broader and deeply dangerous effort to dictate who gets to build a family, whose families are recognized under the law, and who deserves the freedom to parent their children.”
