This week, we marked 4 years since the Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade, eliminating the constitutional right to an abortion in the United States. If you’re an avid reader of this newsletter, I bet you remember the moment you read the news, the moment a worried friend whispered it, or the moment a family member simply said, “I’m so sorry.”
Since then, Ms. Magazine has been tracking preventable deaths caused by abortion bans across the country. These were lives cut short, partners left alone, children, parents, siblings, and best friends whose lives are going on and the absence of their loved one is something they carry every day.
When you think about where you were 4 years ago, I hope you also remember what you did in the time after, when the grief settled enough that action was possible, hand-in-hand with neighbors, because you knew how high the stakes were and you were willing to fight for a better world.
That’s why we’re still a part of this movement that’s far greater than ourselves; it’s for Cigi, Josseli, Yeniifer, Porsha, Navaeh, Tierra, Amber Nicole, Candi, and Taysha, who were people before they were patients, in headlines, and part of a preventable statistic. We’re still here fighting for them, for their families, and for own lives and futures, and none of us are in this fight alone.
